Red Rock Canyon — October 2016

October 28, 2016

Stories and photos from Nevada’s Red Rock Canyon.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget just how beautiful the world is.

I’ve spent my whole life in metropolitan cities – Hong Kong, Boston, and New York City. I can count the number of times I’ve gone hiking or camping on my two hands. With that said, I do genuinely enjoy hiking (not camping). I just don’t do it enough.

Today, thanks to my friend Tyler, I finally made my way over to Red Rock Canyon after moving to Las Vegas three months ago.

It was a perfect late afternoon to go on a hike. Not too hot, not too cold.

I live in Spring Valley, and I work on the Strip. It’s always loud. Red Rock Canyon was comparatively… serene.

I don’t remember the last time I was somewhere this quiet. Now I understand what people mean when they say “silence is deafening”.

Tyler was all geared up with a water pack, food, flashlight, and a knife. What did I bring? A camera, water bottle, and my Amex card. I promise I’ll be more prepared next time.

Here are a few photos from our hike.

It started getting dark 45 minutes in, so we made our way back to the car.

Today’s hike was a short-lived one, but I’m excited to come back soon to explore the other trails. I think I’ve found my local escape.
